[EVENT] Susan Szenasy of Metropolis Magazine Visits Portland to talk Green Building

Susan Szenasy, the editor in chief of Metropolis Magazine, was in Portland, OR the week of June 20th, 2011 to meet with leaders of the green building and sustainability communities.

On Tuesday June 21st, Szenasy moderated a panel discussion at the Gerding Theater amongst some of “Portland’s most sustainable urban thinkers,” including Glumac President Steven Straus. “This is a very special time in Portland,” Straus said, “Thirty years ago environmental and business interests were so far apart. Now we’ve come together around sustainability.”

The panel discussion "Reinforcing a Sustainable Community," was organized by developer Gerding Edlen. In addition to Straus, panelists included:

• Mark Edlen - CEO, Gerding Edlen
• Nancy Hamilton - Director of Business Development, McKinstry
• Mark Henry - Resident of Indigo @ twelve|west and executive chef
• Walker Wells - Director, Green Urbanism Program at Global Green

Szenasy urges Oregonians to continue to be national sustainability role models by raising the bar for energy efficient buildings, “I can guarantee you that the national media is not talking about Portland,” she said.

On Wednesday June 22nd, Szenasy toured the LEED Platinum building twelve | west (designed by Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects and developed by Gerding Edlen) with  a small group that included Portland architecture blogger Brian Libby and several representatives from the AIA Portland chapter. Glumac senior energy analyst Mitch Dec explained Glumac's involvement with the sustainable features of the building, including the iconic wind turbines on the roof. The tour ended with an informal discussion about Portland sustainability.
