LEED Regional Priority Credits

by Brian Berg, Irvine, Associate Mechanical Engineer

The LEED 2009 rating system includes a whole new category of credits. These are known as Regional Priority Credits. The USBGC has analyzed all of the zip codes throughout the United States and selected six credits that are considered most important for each zip code. If a project achieves any of the selected credits for the building's particular zip code, the project receives the point for the credit plus a bonus point for achieving a Regional Priority Credit. Up to four bonus points are possible out of the six priority credits to choose from.

The USGBC has posted what the applicable credits are for each zip code, and each rating system, on the USGBC website. Here is the link to each state's priority credits.

For example, below is a list of the priority credits for the zip code where the Glumac Irvine office is located.

Zip Code 92606

  • SSc4.1
  • SSc7.1
  • WEc1, Opt. 1
  • WEc3 (40%)
  • EAc2 (1%)
  • IEQc8.1

If we were to design a project within this zip code achieving the requirements of the credits listed above, we would receive all of the points associated with the credits, plus four bonus points.

The addition of this credit category is to put focus on credits important and unique to specific localities. Each of the USGBC regional councils have identified which six credits should be priorities, and these have been included by the USGBC as part of the LEED 2009 rating system. Which credits are priorities depend on the rating system being used.
