Autodesk University

by Skander Spies, Energy Analyst, and Christine Hamilton, Corporate Marketing Coordinator

Several employees well-represented Glumac at the Autodesk University conference. Dana Troy, Mitch Dec, Skander Spies (from Portland’s Energy Services department) and Scott Vollmoeller (Seattle’s Managing Principal) - as well as former Glumac employee Aryn Bergman, who is now with Autodesk - were all in attendance at the annual conference held this past December in Las Vegas.

Autodesk products are used extensively for product design, graphic design and information management, as well as building design. Sustainability was at the forefront of the conference topics, and there were a number of presentations focused on energy analysis, detailed sustainable design and the collaborative design process.

On the first day of the conference, Glumac was mentioned by Carl Bass (CEO of Autodesk) in the opening keynote.

Glumac’s attendees gave an entire afternoon of presentations on some of the advanced energy analysis methods we have developed. Dana and Aryn teamed up to showcase work using EcoTect and CFDesign to evaluate daylighting and natural ventilation opportunities. Mitch followed with a presentation discussing how BIM tools can accelerate the process of existing building energy audits, and Skander wrapped up by on how the use of Revit has improved the workflow process, client communication and modeling accuracy in energy modeling projects.

The next day, Scott presented a special session designed for building owners, which highlighted several case studies demonstrating Glumac’s adoption and expertise in the use of Revit. Giving the presentations early on opened up time for Glumac employees to take in some of the other excellent presentations, including a talk by Amory Lovins (Director of the Rocky Mountain Institute), a discussion focused on the use of gbXML files in load calculations and a PechaKucha night of short presentations on advanced design topics.
