Glenn Claycomb, P.E., LEED® AP In the center of the building, an oval exterior garden open to the sky is surrounded by glass to light the main reading room and the children's library. Children will enjoy a separate soaring "story cone" and outdoor activities in their own garden and amphitheater. Young adults have a room for themselves near the small study rooms. A public area with a small kitchen near the entrance will be available after normal hours for homework and community meetings. Glumac designed the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire alarm and protection, audiovisual, security, and information technology systems. Several mechanical schemes were considered, including underfloor air supply with a small central plant, but budget constraints called for creative thinking to find a low cost solution for flexible control and low energy use. The result is rooftop package units with variable volume terminals and simple but effective controls. A dedicated system for the public area can be operated when the rest of the library is closed. The unique architecture required a detailed design to coordinate all disciplines. |
