Glumac Moves Quickly To Deliver
A Fast-Track Data Center Expansion
David Summers, P.E., LEED® AP, Los Angeles Associate

Earthlink was growing and their Pasadena Data Center needed to expand. They required 7,000 sf of additional data center space, and they were searching for an engineering firm that could make it happen. With no time to waste, Earthlink was asking one important question, "Can you complete the design in two months?" Glumac said, "Yes!"

Commissioning In Action At Savvis

                                     Commissioning Agents at work

Paul Tiña, LEED® AP, San Francisco Associate

Glumac was the commissioning agent for Savvis SC7, a two-story data center located in Santa Clara, California. The installed mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems were based on a design load of 75 watts/sf for a total building area of 130,000 sf. The facility was previously managed by Exodus Communications and the mechanical and electrical infrastructure was installed during the original buildout of the facility. Hence, the scope of the project included retro-commissioning of the critical support systems.

Commissioning is the systematic process of ensuring that all building systems perform individually and interactively in accordance with design specifications and owner's operational needs. Commissioning is intended to achieve the following objectives:

Energy Modeling: A Tool For Informed Design and Measurable Savings

John Aulbach, P.E., CEM, Irvine Senior Energy Analyst

Architecture can have a great influence on key energy demands such as ventilation, lighting, cooling and heating. When thoroughly informed about the complex synergies between building design and energy use, architects and designers can make informed and cost effective primary decisions about energy savings features in their buildings. In order to make these decisions, it is particularly important to understand the energy tradeoffs in the early stages of a project.

The Natural Choice For Sustainable Businesses: The Oregon Natural Step

Sonya Salanti, Portland Marketing Coordinator

How can businesses take achievable steps towards creating a sustainable workplace?

At first blush, the idea of remaking our organizations into ecologically sound, socially responsible businesses may seem daunting. However, many Oregon businesses and municipalities have implemented successful sustainability programs by keeping pace with The Oregon Natural Step.

Rooted in the fundamental laws of science and nature, The Oregon Natural Step is founded on a core understanding of the systems that allow the planet to replenish itself and flourish without negatively impacting its inhabitants and ecosystems. By following the Natural Step Framework, businesses use the Four System Conditions as a basis to create a customized sustainability plan that integrates the principles of sustainability with the necessity of profitability and a secure client base.
