AMD Commissioning: LEED® and Raised Floor Experience

Bob Schroeder, P.E., LEED® AP, Portland Associate Principal

There's something green going on in Austin, and Glumac is a part of it.

In conjunction with ccrd partners, Glumac is performing the building commissioning on Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) innovative new Lone Star campus in Austin, Texas. The Sunnyvale, California-based company is a leading global provider of microprocessors and other consumer electronics. Their new campus in Austin's Oak Hill consists of four office buildings, a dining commons building, a central utility plant and three parking garages. This project consolidates 12 separate AMD facilities, currently spread throughout the city, that employs approximately 2,000 people.

"Glumac is pleased to bring our experience, particularly with raised floor installations, to this significant project," said Mike Steinmann, a Principal in the Glumac San Francisco office and the Principal in charge of the project. Bob Schroeder, an Associate Principal in Glumac's Portland office, is the Project Manager.

Caltrans: Design/Build LEED® State Building

Reid Appel, P.E., Sacramento Associate

Glumac is proud to be teamed with Turner Construction Company and AC Martin Partners contributing to the design/build delivery of the new Caltrans District 3 Headquarters building in Marysville, California. Currently under construction, the five-story, 208,000 sf building will provide the State of California with an energy efficient, LEED® NC Silver facility that promotes a healthy and productive work environment and fits within the context of the community.

Photovoltaic Systems: Third Party Financing Options

Erik Ring, P.E., LEED®AP, Irvine Associate

Although there is increasing interest in on-site renewable energy systems, many commercial building projects are not able to install photovoltaic (PV) solar electric systems due to the high initial cost of these systems. However, a new business model has emerged that allows buildings to install renewable energy PV systems without up front capital.

Several firms are offering third-party, turn-key financing and installation of PV systems to customers who enter long-term power purchase agreements for the electrical output of the on-site PV system.

Federal Business Energy Tax Incentives

Tom White, P.E., LEED® AP, Portland Associate

The Energy Policy Act (EPAct) of 2005 authorizes federal tax incentives for certain non-residential investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy put into service between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2008.

NOTE: State tax credits are also available for most of these systems, however, the requirements may differ somewhat from the federal tax credits. In addition, for state tax credits you must apply for pre-certification to ensure the system qualifies before you proceed.
