Wayne L. Morse Federal Courthouse Receives AIA Top 10 Green Projects Award

A key Glumac project, the Wayne L. Morse Courthouse in Eugene, Oregon, has earned the esteemed award as one of this year's Top 10 Green Projects by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Committee on the Environment (COTE).

The project, which achieved LEED® Gold certification, includes numerous innovative designs in lighting, HVAC systems, water management, materials, environmental quality, and sustainable site planning and operations. From the focused leadership of the U.S. General Services Administration, to the final involvement of the contractors and subs who laid in the last details of construction, the project is a superb example of successful collaboration and a strong commitment to green design.

Building Integrated Photovoltaics

The term Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) refers to any technology that integrates PV cells into a building component.

Crystalline silicon cells have been used in BIPV applications such as roof tiles and glazing. The cells have the "solar cell look" and have a significant impact on the building's aesthetic appearance. Nevertheless, crystalline panels can often be integrated into the building facade, and they also make excellent shading devices such as window overhangs or parking lot covers.

With the development of thin-film technology, the opportunities for BIPV applications have grown due to the seamless integration with the architectural aesthetic.

 

Plumbing LEED® Points

This article is to provide an overview of potential LEED® points available in a building and sustainable features focusing on the plumbing system. So what is LEED®?

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) developed the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) rating system in 1998. This rating system provides a point system score card to evaluate the environmental performance from a whole building perspective (non-residential). The rating system is organized into five environmental categories: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy & Atmosphere, Materials & Resources, and Indoor Environmental Quality. For the purpose of our discussion we will be focusing on Water Efficiency.

The Water Efficiency category of the LEED® rating system is the least emphasized, with a potential of three LEED® points obtainable through Innovative Waste Water Technologies and Water Use Reduction. The LEED® rating system for Water Use Reduction is based on the U.S. Energy Policy Act of 1992. This Act set maximum plumbing fixture flow rates.

 


Sustainability in Glumac Offices:
Beyond New Construction Projects

In recent months, Glumac has taken major steps forward in promoting sustainable building practices by pursuing LEED® certification for our own offices. In the realm of new construction projects, Glumac recently moved into our new Sacramento office, designed with a goal of LEED® Platinum certification and currently awaiting final review from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Glumac has also demonstrated that even existing spaces can incorporate sustainable design features, such as those implemented in their own Portland office. The Portland office renovation, completed in December 2006, achieved a final rating of Silver under the USGBC's LEED for Commercial Interiors® (LEED-CI®) program.

Dick Glumac was awarded with a certificate honoring his 50 years of ASHRAE membership at the Annual ASHRAE meeting this past June, held in Long Beach, California. Dick joined ASHRAE in 1956 when he graduated from the University of Toronto. He then worked at a small consulting firm with Harold Kuschner, with whom he was reunited at the convention after 40 years, as a mechanical consulting engineer in Los Angeles in the 1960's before founding Glumac in 1971. Steve Straus, President of Glumac, and Richard Holzer, Managing Principal of the Irvine office, also attended the ceremony.


David Gottfried, founder of the U.S. Green Building Council, came to the Glumac Los Angeles office to meet with Dick Glumac and Steve Straus. As founder of the USGBC in 1993, David led the development of the LEED Green Building Rating System. He is currently President of WorldBuild, a new international organization which aims to do on an international scale what the USGBC has done in the United States. He is also Vice President of Thomas Properties Group and is leading the implementation of their green building fund.

Both Dick Glumac and David Gottfried related their personal stories of perseverance and triumph to an audience of avid listeners. Dick recounted his days on the water polo team, immigrating to the US after World War II, and starting his own company. David described the challenges that he faced founding the USGBC before green building was popular, and working tirelessly to transform the marketplace to embrace sustainability.
