Courthouse Pushes the Boundaries of Tradition: Wayne L. Morse U.S. Courthouse

The Wayne L. Morse U.S. Courthouse has recently received the 2008 Platinum Award from Building Design + Construction magazine. This $79 million project was completed in August 2006 and was the first federal courthouse to receive LEED® Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. Glumac collaborated with DLR Group (Architect of Record), Morphosis (Design Architect), JE Dunn Construction (GC) and Brightworks (LEED® Consultant), among others, to help the GSA realize their vision for this project.

Cool Roofs: Optimal Thermal Performance

a

A cool roof is a term for a roof that has been treated with a coating to reduce the amount of absorbed solar radiation. In general, these coatings are white or light-colored, but new coatings are being developed in various colors that produce equal results. Cool roofs are best used in hot climates to maximize the energy savings in summer and minimize the energy penalty in winter. In cold climates, dark roofs have a beneficial passive heating effect in the winter. Cool roof coatings increase the heating costs compared to a dark-colored roof. In areas where there are cold, cloudy winters and mild summers, the cooling benefits of a cool roof system are usually outweighed by the increased heating costs in the wintertime.
