ccrd and Glumac Celebrate 10th Year
of Alliance

by Steven Straus, President, LEED AP

What started as a friendship between Dave Duthu of ccrd partners and Dick Glumac over 25 years ago, has evolved into a 10 year formal engineering alliance between the firms. Dick Glumac and Dave Duthu started working together on microelectronic projects for Texas Instruments. Dave represented the local mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) engineering firm and Dick provided acoustic and vibration testing and analysis, a critical component for improving yield in micro electronics' facilities. The friendship between the partners evolved, not only in working together on significant projects, but also on social occasions including motorcycle trips across the country.

LACCD Sustainable Design Standards

by Lauren Kuntz, San Francisco, Commissioning Agent

With the construction industry being transformed by green building and the LEED Rating System, many new projects are "greening" their design practices and specifications to be more sustainable. It is common for large scale Owners to find themselves with multiple projects, each with different A/E and construction teams. Rather than reinventing the wheel with each project, these Owners are finding it beneficial to standardize their building practices and provide each A/E team a framework for their designs.

Glumac had recently come across many companies attempting to design "green prototype" office spaces, retail stores, call centers, etc. to replicate in subsequent projects. School districts, colleges and universities have numerous buildings, often on multiple campuses, making them prime candidates for standardizing as well. Recently, the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) turned to Glumac's expertise in green design and the LEED rating system to create their new Sustainable Design Standards.

LEED Regional Priority Credits

by Brian Berg, Irvine, Associate Mechanical Engineer

The LEED 2009 rating system includes a whole new category of credits. These are known as Regional Priority Credits. The USBGC has analyzed all of the zip codes throughout the United States and selected six credits that are considered most important for each zip code. If a project achieves any of the selected credits for the building's particular zip code, the project receives the point for the credit plus a bonus point for achieving a Regional Priority Credit. Up to four bonus points are possible out of the six priority credits to choose from.>

Benefits of Retro Commissioning

by Charles Hutchinson, Irvine, Commissioning Agent

In the fall of 2007, Glumac was selected to participate in the retro commissioning process for the First American Corporation Campus located in Santa Ana, California, for the PECI Retro Commissioning Program. The focus of this program was to look for low cost improvements with short paybacks. The tasks included equipment assessment through visual inspection, analysis of system data through the building management system and portable data loggers, compilation of all findings, implementation of selected measures, verification of implemented measures, submission of a final report and training for the Owner. This process took almost two years to complete. The benefits included improved building performance, reduced energy usage and carbon emissions reduction.
